La Iruela, a apenas dos kilómetros de Cazorla, se encuentra enclavada en las Sierras Prebéticas de Cazorla y El Pozo que cortan el valle del Guadalquivir en su curso alto, y cuyo territorio riegan los ríos Borosa, Cazorla y Cañamares.
La carretera que sube a la sierra desde Cazorla bordea esta pequeña, pero asombrosa población. Su perfil más conocido lo debe al castillo, una fortaleza legendaria que llegó a ser propiedad de los Templarios y que domina el valle del Guadalquivir. La necesidad de defenderse ha dado lugar a esta fortificación que, por su vertiente más abrupta es inexpugnable. Pero La Iruela encierra más atractivos,
Su Castillo de origen almohade
El Castillo de La Iruela, un pequeño, pero espectacular castillo, está situado en lo alto de un abrupto risco en pleno Parque Natural de la Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas, desde donde se divisan impresionantes vistas tanto de la localidad como de su entorno.
Colgado en una peña sobre el mismo pueblo, de origen templario, del que destaca su torre del homenaje. Fue declarado Monumento Histórico en 1985.
Actualmente, entre el castillo y la peña se ha creado un foro o anfiteatro donde se realizan actividades artísticas, siendo reconocidos los espectáculos pirotécnicos realizados en él con motivo de las fiestas de agosto, en honor a la Virgen de los Desamparados.
La Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Silos, del siglo XVI
Junto al castillo encontrarás las ruinas de la Iglesia de Sto. Domingo de Silos. Construida por orden de Don Francisco de los Cobos dentro del recinto amurallado del castillo. Está dedicada al patrón de La Iruela, Santo Domingo de Silos.
La leyenda cuenta que se construyó sobre el lugar en que los árabes tenían prisioneros a los cristianos cautivos y allí estuvo Santo Domingo ejerciendo su labor. En el edificio se aprecian trazas de los discípulos de Vandelvira. Es una visita obligada para cualquier amante de la Historia.
Y su casco antiguo, declarado Conjunto Histórico
Dada su accidentada topografía, el núcleo urbano está formado por estrechas y empinadas calles, jalonadas por las típicas casas blancas cubiertas por tejas árabes. En sus fachadas no faltan floridos balcones, y en su interior cuentan con frescos patios donde crecen centenarias parras.
Además te recomendamos visitar la casa Consistorial,el poblado Romano, las ermitas de San Juliá, la de San Martín y la de los Desamparados,la Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción o el Eremitorio del Arroyo de la Magdalena.
