Una de las maravillas que han resistido al paso del tiempo hasta convertirse en algo excepcional son los pinos más viejos de la Península Ibérica de los que hay evidencia científica. Están entre los más antiguos de Europa, pues en muy pocos lugares hay pinos milenarios.
Y es que Cazorla es uno de los ecosistemas mejor conservados de Andalucía. En él conviven más de 200 especies animales y más de 2.300 vegetales. Uno de los árboles más apreciados de la sierra es el tejo, por la longevidad de varios ejemplares monumentales.
Son al menos siete ejemplares con hasta 1.041 o 1.040 años en un bosque de gigantes centenarios, con muchos árboles que han llegado a los diez siglos de vida, y un ejemplar que alcanzaría los 2.000 años de edad. Uno de los lugares mágicos que guarda lo que hoy es el Parque Natural de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas.
Desde mucho tiempo atrás se sabía que entre los pinos de zonas como el Pico Cabañas, la Loma Cagasebo o Puertollano había ejemplares de muchos años. Pero no fue hasta hace poco tiempo cuando un estudio científico reveló la auténtica magnitud de la maravilla que vivía en esos montes.
Unos científicos necesitaban árboles de mucha edad para hacer estudios sobre el clima. El sistema es simple. Un anillo, un año. Un año de lluvias es un anillo grueso, uno de sequía es apenas una línea, un incendio deja un círculo negro, un rayo una herida.
Con una barrena se sacaron secciones de madera de algunos ejemplares. Al contar los anillos saltó la sorpresa: había árboles con más de mil años.
Destacan más por gruesos que por altos, con troncos retorcidos, vencidos en algunos casos por el peso de la nieve que se acumula sobre las ramas en invierno, heridos por rayos.
El último ejemplar que murió por causas naturales tenía 990 años, y había alcanzado los 23 metros de alto. El grosor del tronco superaba los dos metros y medio.
