Las Ruinas de Santa María fue el monumento más importante del Adelantamiento. Aunque no se conoce con exactitud la fecha de su construcción, parece casi seguro que ésta se llevó a cabo en el siglo XVI.
Su estilo es renacentista y muy posiblemente su autor sea Andrés de Vandelvira, ya que muchos de sus elementos pueden ser reconocidos en conocidos templos de su autoría en Úbeda. La portada de la fachada que mira hacia la calle de la Hoz es una réplica casi exacta de la que se puede admirar en la Iglesia de San Miguel de Jaén.
En cuanto a quién ordenó su construcción, se duda si la ofra fue sufragada por la iglesia episcopal de Toledo o por los marqueses de Camarasa, que eran Adelantados en aquellos tiempos.
Edificada sobre el río Cerezuelo, lo que obligó a canalizarlo previamente, que entra en una gran bóveda (la bóveda del río Cerezuelo) bajo el altar mayor, atravesando toda la iglesia, para continuar su curso bajo la Plaza de Santa María.
Es muy probable que el templo no se llegase a concluir completamente y que los serios daños causados por la terrible tormenta e inundación de 1694 contribuyera a dificultar aún más las posibilidades de finalizarla.
En las ruinas, es posible apreciar aún algunos rasgos de su magnífica traza renacentista:
– La espléndida bóveda baída del interior de la torre, en la capilla de San Cristobalón.
– La bóveda de casetones sobre el ábside y altar mayor.
– La portada de la fachada norte, abierta hacia la Plaza de Santa María.
– La portada de la fachada suroeste o lateral, con arco de medio punto y orden compuesto.
– Otros elementos son la capilla de la sacristía, provista de una sólida escalera de caracol y, la equilibrada solución de paramentos y vanos.
Historia de las Ruinas de Santa María en Cazorla
Durante la guerra de la Independencia, se realizaban corridas de toros en la Plaza de Santa María. Año 1.903 fue incendiada, y fue durante la Guerra Civil cuando adquirió el aspecto que actualmente presenta.
En los años 70 y 80 fue utilizado como auditorio para conciertos y representaciones teatrales, ofreciendo un magnífico marco.
Durante los años 2009-2010 sufrió una profunda restauración en la que se fijó toda su estructura, se realizó una profunda limpieza de la piedra y se desarrollo un proyecto de iluminación tanto interior como exterior del monumento.
Actualmente el Ayuntamiento de Cazorla tiene fijada la oficina municipal de información y turismo y espacio multiusos, donde se realizan conciertos y representaciones.
